Day 8 - Welcome to Oregon

Day 8 - Monday, July 7

Kennewick to Pendleton —69 mi, 111 km

Biking again. From Kennewick to Pendleton. In the beginning we crossed the Columbia river and followed it downstream. In Kennewick are several bridges.

We were going Southwest, and we were fighting a headwind. We passed a historical place where Fort Walla Walla used to be.

Somewhere we left Washington and entered the state of Oregon.

About half way we turned left and we had less problems with the wind. It became very hot. This is a dry area and there are hardly any trees. We saw much wheat growing – I didn’t know that Oregon had so much wheat. We came in around 3:00 p.m. The gear truck was not even in. We waited in the shade of the school until we could set up our tents.

During this day I rode together with Gerry Loonstra. He is 72 years old and still bikes strong – I hope to be in shape like that when I am that old.

He lives in Alberta, but is originally from Friesland, not far from Dokkum, where I taught at the Agriculture School before going to Haiti. In fact, I found out that he was a student at that school in 1955/56, while I was a teacher in 1979-1982. I worked together with two teachers that had taught him in the fifties.
