Day 12 - Horses: Jealous of our freedom or thinking we are crazy?

Day 12 - Friday, July 11

Huntington to Ontario —35 mi, 56 km

Today was a short ride from Huntington to Ontario (both in Oregon). We have been traveling along the border with Idaho. We passed a sign stating that we were entering the Mountain Time Zone.

These are signs that we are moving along in the Eastern direction. Tomorrow we hope to enter the state of Idaho, and then we are already in our third state.

There is not too much to report today. Still the contrast between the nature (which is desert and very dry here) and the irrigated fields in the valley. The agriculture land sometimes looked the same as in the Dutch polders with big fields of potatoes, wheat, corn, onions, and sugar beets. But the background of dry mountains showed clearly that we were not in the Netherlands.

A group of horses stood at a fence. I was watching them, and they were watching me.

What did they think of these bike riders passing on their bikes? Were they jealous of our freedom to bike where we wanted, while they were limited by barbed wire? Or were they thinking that these humans were crazy to be so active on a hot day? We will never know!

We are camping in this town of Ontario. Three people are leaving us tomorrow. They have other obligations and could only commit to two weeks on the tour. Slowly, we are learning to know more people in the group and it is sad to see people leave.
