St. Catharines to Byron —77 mi, 124 km
This morning we first drove Mirjam, Adrian, and Louis to the train station. They had to be on the 7 o'clock train. It was still dark when we dropped them off.
After that we went to Beacon Christian School to get our bikes and some food for lunch. Just after 7:00 am we left from the school in the direction of Niagara Falls and the US border. On the way to Niagara we passed a lock that is in the canal between lake Erie and lake Ontario. There was a ship in the lock, which basically had to rise to the height of Niagara Falls.
The whole group of bikers arrived at the border. Jen, the assistant of the director, was checking out if everyone was there before we could go over the border.
About ten o’clock we all went over the border together. With a motorcycle from the tour leading the way, we slowly biked over the bridge.
The collaboration of US customs was amazing – they didn’t ask us to show our passports; we just biked over the bridge, which is the border between Canada and the US. Of course, the tour director had already sent the list of names with passport numbers to the customs supervisor weeks before, but still the border crossing today was extremely smooth.
Back in the US, we were biking in groups of 5 or 6 riders. The wind was northwest and we were traveling east and southeast, so the wind was sometimes a crosswind and often kind of a tailwind. The biking went well – the wind was good and it was not hot. We passed through different towns, including Oakfield.
Here there are no vineyards, but instead there are fields with different types of cabbage.
We are camping now in an RV park in Byron. This is the last week of the Sea-to-Sea tour. In a week, I will be back in the office in Haiti. These 9 weeks have passed so fast. I feel sad thinking that this great adventure will end Saturday. At the same time, I am looking forward to my family in Haiti. I realize that it is a privilege to be part of this tour during this summer.
