Day 39 - "...huge windmills, slowly turning in the wind, is magnificent"

Day 39 - Thursday, August 7

Algona to New Hampton —113 mi, 182 km

Today another long ride. We were riding again in east direction, but with a crosswind from the north. My partner already got a flat tire during the first 20 kilometers and that slowed us down. So today was not as easy as yesterday, but most of the people made it, by the grace of God. I arrived at the camp around 5:00 p.m.

Iowa is a green state. Some people think all that corn and soybeans is boring, but I think it is beautiful. The main thing that was different today were the windmills.

We passed two areas with more than a hundred windmills. So probably those are areas that normally have much wind. The view of all these huge windmills, slowly turning in the wind, is magnificent. I forgot my camera again today, so Dirk van Wyngaarden, one of the other riders, gave me two of his pictures.

Now I am sitting in the library trying to send you the information from the past two days. In every town where we camp, riders of our group flood the local public library to get their blogs updated and to answer their emails. John VanderVeen, another cyclist, took a picture of some of the riders, including me, in the library in New Hampton. The internet system of the camp is not working at this moment, so that is why we are all here.

I keep it short today. I am very tired of these long rides – two in a row of 113 miles and tomorrow the third one of 100 miles. I want to go to bed early today. God bless you all.
