Day 44 - $10, A Windmill, and Chicago Pizza

Day 44 - Tuesday, August 12

Woodstock to Palos Heights —83 mi, 134 km

About the first half of the ride was on a bike path along the river Fox and the rest was biking in an urban situation (these are all suburbs of Chicago).

When I left this morning we were biking through downtown Woodstock, a small town with about 20,000 people. The square had several older buildings, which were still functional.

Two market people were setting up their booth. I talked with one of them about the tour, handing out a card with the information. He spontaneously donated 10 dollars for the cause.

Today I started biking alone. Somewhere along the road I got together with Gerry Loonstra with whom I had been biking a lot during the weeks between Seattle and Denver. After about 15 kilometers we got to the Fox trail that was going along a river. It is one of these former rail road tracks that has been converted into a bike path. The surroundings were beautiful, nice river with a lot of trees along the sides. We passed several towns along this path, and many bridges.

At the town of Aurora we found a welcoming committee from the Wheaton CRC with cookies. They were in a park with a real Dutch windmill, right at the bike path. This windmill is considered to be the best example of an authentic Dutch windmill in the United States. One of the ladies was very helpful in taking pictures of my biking partner and I with the windmill in the background.

She also took orders for specific bike parts. I asked her to buy me new cleats for my shoes, because the ones I have are completely worn.

The second part of this day, biking through a chain of suburbs was not really fun. For most of that part of the ride, we were on roads with much traffic and many traffic lights. We did come in at about 4:00 p.m. and are now at Trinity Christian College. The college served us a supper with real Chicago pizza and we had a get together with members from the CRC community.
