Day 55 - A visit with my grandsons.

Day 55 - Saturday, August 23

Hamilton to St. Catharines —46 mi, 74 km

Today was going to be a short ride, but it would take time. Thanks to the hospitality of at least 5 CRCs we were offered food and drinks nearly every 15 kilometers.

The food was great and this made the day trip really easy and enjoyable for us. I did stop at all these places, but not long. Mirjam, our daughter, with her two children came down from Montreal and they were waiting at a friend’s house in Beamsville.

But first we passed the city of Hamilton on the south side. The road was leading over the "escarpment”, an area that has been lifted up, creating a steep cliff. We stopped and took a picture of the view of the city of Hamilton with lake Ontario in the background.

Later we went down the escarpment in one of the steepest roads we have taken during this tour, a 12% hill. At the bottom of the hill was a stop sign, which was unfair, because we couldn’t really use the speed of this hill.

The area between Hamilton and St. Catharines has seen of lot of changes in the past years. Nowadays, there are many more vineyards and wineries than in the past. An old Victorian house with a vineyard was only one of the many examples.

The vines were full of grapes.

Around 10 a.m. I arrived in Beamsville and found the house of Ruth and Rick Jongejan. This couple had taught in Haiti in the past and Mirjam was staying at their house. Just when I got to the house, Mirjam and Adrian (3 years old) came out. Adrian was dancing in the street, calling “opa”.

Mirjam also had her 2 month old baby, Louis, with her. This was the first time I saw him.

Later, I biked to Beacon Christian School where the camp was. Mirjam picked me up and we went to Niagara Falls. Adrian enjoyed the falls, especially the beautiful rainbow that was visible in the mist of the falls.
